Comrie woman Fran Loots believes there’s strength in numbers when it comes to trying to keep New Year resolutions about doing more exercise.
She has set up a Facebook page on the internet where people can support one another to achieve their fitness goals this year, however modest.
Following on from the success of last year’s challenge, Fran is inviting people to start small and commit to a minimum of 10 minutes a day and build it up from there.
As the owner of local health and wellbeing businesses, Breathing Space Outdoors and Aye Can, Fran has some expertise in this area.
She said: “I really surprised myself in completing my own challenge last year of doing something every day. I started with a target of 30 minutes and kept to this, and more, for the whole year. Sometimes this meant doing several lots of 10 minutes as time pressures made it difficult.”
“We’re all guilty of making promises at New Year and breaking them a short time later. The Get Up and Go Facebook event allows people to commit to being active, to update others on their progress and to be encouraged by others to keep going!”
And, just a few days into 2013, more than 50 people have already signed up.
Fran added: “At the moment, as well as the conventional ways of exercising like walking and cycling, we’ve got people talking about skipping and belly dancing too.
“The response has been really positive. It’s not a competition, it’s completely free to sign up and post messages on the site, and it’s for everyone. As well as Strathearn folk signing up, there’s been interest from Fife, Edinburgh, England, Denmark and Spain!”
