Roseanna Cunningham chasing answers about Comrie flooding

Oct 5 2012

by Katy Gordon, Strathearn Herald

Strathearn MSP Roseanna Cunningham has demanded answers from various agencies over the Comrie floods.

Ms Cunningham has asked Perth and Kinross Council, SEPA and Scottish Water a series of key questions on steps taken over the past 20 years in flood prevention.

She said the answers should shed light on steps that were taken in the aftermath of flooding in the past, as well as clarifying measures the council are introducing at present.

Speaking last week, Ms Cunningham said: “Folk in Comrie deserve to know exactly what the council have been doing in terms of flooding in the area.

“These questions are intended, not as a witch hunt, but as an attempt to enable the people of Comrie to have their faith restored in the authorities.

“At present there is a lot of confusion and blame shifting between the different agencies involved.

“The questions I am putting to SEPA, Perth and Kinross Council and Scottish Water aim to clarify matters.”

Ms Cunningham is seeking to find out what the agencies have done about flood mitigation, when council officials were made aware of the flooding in Comrie and its severity, details of instances of the Ruchill bursting its banks going back to 1980, PKC’s involvement in establishing a flood risk advisory group for the area around the village, and copies of a number of documents.

She has also asked if any charges have been levied on landowners who failed to comply with requests made by PKC – a question also put to SEPA – as part of their powers in flood management legislation.

Her questions to SEPA included requests for copies of documentsand issues about an advisory group.

Scottish Water was asked whether a flood risk assessment for the village’s sewage system existed.
