Local councillor Bob Ellis has applied to be a volunteer at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year.
Thousands of potential volunteers have already thrown their hat into the ring for a chance to be part of the 2014 sporting showpiece, which is being billed as the biggest sporting and cultural event Scotland has ever seen.
And sports enthusiast Councillor Ellis – convener of Perth and Kinross Council’s Sport and Active Recreation Forum as well as chair of the region’s Sports Council and vice-chair of the Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils – is keen to be involved.
He said: “I am sure everyone will remember the army of volunteers who descended on London and other venues around the country to look at every aspect of the Olympic Games last year.
“Those games would not have run so smoothly without that magnificent army.
“As I am sure everyone will be aware, we have a couple of huge events happening next year in the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup.
“The call for 15,000 volunteers went out last year and I think that to date they have had a response of well over 10,000 – myself being one of them.
“There are many jobs to do over the period of the Games, probably far too many to mention.
“But when you register and go through the online form you see just what is on offer to the prospective volunteer.
“This process takes around 20 minutes and there are steps to go through but when it is done, you can then sit back and wait for the next email hopefully asking you to come through to Glasgow for an interview.
“I know I cannot wait for that email!”
Explaining why he had applied, Councillor Ellis declared: “Playing a part in the games as a volunteer is the chance of a lifetime as far as I’m concerned.
“It would be an honour to be part of what is going to be one of the greatest sporting and cultural events in the calendar, and to get the chance to meet like-minded people from other Commonwealth countries.”
“It is still not too late to apply as the window of opportunity is still open for a couple of weeks yet.
“So if anyone out there thinks that they would like to apply to be a volunteer for this great sporting event and help the many visitors, coaches, athletes – and, of course, all of those officers who are and have been working hard throughout the bid and now towards July 2014 – get that form filled in!”

The closing date for applications is Thursday, February 28.
