Crieff councillor in graffiti cover up

Oct 1 2010

by Lynn Duke, Strathearn Herald

A CRIEFF resident fed up by the failure of Transerv to remove unsightly graffiti daubed round the town three weeks ago has taken matters into his own hands.

Whilst most owners of the targeted buildings cleaned up the mess immediately, one vulgar drawing and scrawl remained in a prominent position in the High Street.

Not wanting to see residents or visitors subjected to the obscenity any longer, local community councillor and keen promoter of Crieff, Angus MacDonald, used his own can of spray paint to obliterate it.

He told the Herald: “I’m really concerned about what visitors to the town think and see, particularly this weekend as there is a lot going on with conferences at the Hydro and a 150-year reunion event at Morrison’s Academy. This doesn’t make Crieff look good at all.

“I’d spoken to Transerv on six separate occasions over the last two weeks. They said they had a machine out here to do the job but it wasn’t powerful enough but they promised faithfully that it would be removed on Tuesday but it wasn’t so I asked the chap at Transerv if it was ok to spray something myself and he told me to go ahead.”

Residents who watched Angus clean up the gross graffiti applauded his initiative. Making the pavement as good as new only took him five minutes at a cost of £3.25.

“It’s terrible that people have had to walk past this every day,” said one. “The other graffiti all disappeared within days of it happening so why couldn’t Transerv have got their act together and got rid of this bit as easily. You can’t help but notice it and it’s really been bringing the town down.

“Thank goodness for people like Angus.”
