At St Stephen’s Church she is a much respected member of the congregation.
She is heavily involved with the finance and welcoming committees as well as helping with cleaning the church and organising rotas.
The British Legion also benefits from Annette’s support. She is there every Thursday and Saturday evening as bingo caller and also helps out with catering and fund-raising.
On a Wednesday afternoon she helps out at the library with the genealogy group, assisting people from home and abroad research their family history, and when Margaret Anton and her husband gave up the running of the Blairgowrie and Rattray Blethers group, Annette was one of those who stepped in to carry it on.
A former pupil of St Stephen’s Primary School and Blairgowrie High School, Annette worked for Waverley Cameron for 24 years. Latterly she worked in Aberfeldy and at Rosemount Care Home before retiring around five and a half years ago.
“I don’t know how I had the time to work!” she said.
Explaining how she got involved with all the voluntary work she does, she said: “My mum and dad were great ones for the Legion and I ended up helping out through them.
“It was the same with the church, you just get roped into things whenever help is needed!
“I got involved with the genealogy research at the library after a cousin had asked me to help research our own family tree, and with the Blethers too, I started going out of interest and got more heavily involved.
“I don’t mind, if it is something I am keen on and I want to help and they want me to help then that is great. I help out because I like doing it, I enjoy doing it.
“I am quite happy to give something back to the town, Blairgowrie is my town.
“To receive this accolade is a great honour, especially since I am following in the footsteps of so many worthy previous winners.”
Councillor Caroline Shiers was on the independent panel of judges. She congratulated Annette on her award, saying: “I was delighted to be asked to help judge the entries for the citizen of the year.
“We were unanimous in our choice of Annette. Annette is a very worthy citizen of the year. She clearly devotes a huge amount of her life to serving her community - the large number of people who nominated her commented on her cheery nature, her selfless dedication and her willingness to do whatever needs done.
“I hope Annette knows how many people hold her in high regard in the town and that she really enjoys being Citizen of the Year.”
