Blairgowrie-based tattoo artist Derrick Young has described winning two awards at the inaugural Dundee Tattoo Convention as “really special”.
Mr Young, who recently opened Hammer God Tattoos in the Wellmeadow, was honoured for striking images depicting burlesque star Dita Von Tease and late Hollywood actor Heath Ledger.
The designs secured the American artist top honours in the best realism and best colour categories, respectively, at the two-day convention, which was held in the University of Abertay student union on Bell Street towards the end of last month.
Mr Young, the former owner Yankee Tattoo in the City of Discovery, has been tattooing for more than 20 years and has won several accolades previously, mainly for black and grey tattoo work.
Speaking after his win, he said: “I was really pleased to have come away with two awards, especially since I have been working in America over the past year and have only been back on the Scottish scene for a few months.
“And winning for new work done at the show was really special.
“The competition at this convention was pretty tough, and to win in categories that I haven’t won in before is pretty exciting.”
In excess of 40 artists attended the event.
Mr Young continued: “For a first time event, the show was very well-attended, both by artists and the public.
“All sorts of tastes were catered for, from black and grey to full colour, calf tattoos to head tattoos, and two very busy piercers were on hand to put new holes in very willing clients.
“The atmosphere at the convention was fantastic – artists were supportive and complimentary of each others’ work and encouraging of the newbies who were getting their first convention under their belts.
“It was well organised and I think people are already looking forward to next year’s convention. So well done to Ky Thomasson for putting together the event and jumping through all the hoops to make it happen.”
